This game was invented in Florence, Italy at the time of Francesco de Medici during the late 16th century.  He sent a copy to Philip II of Spain as a gift.  It reached England and was entered in the Stationers’ Register by John Wolfe as ‘the newe and most pleasant game of the Goose’ on June 16, 1597.  It is a basic race game.
